The exercise introduces the multiple uses of models, from communication, to being tools which enable the design process. Basic model-making techniques like drafting, cutting and pasting are
introduced through a time problem during which the students select appropriate materials to make a cube, a cuboid and a pyramid. Then, the focus shifts to developing the ability to handle thick paper
boards, to use material effi ciently, and to make use of cladding techniques. The students learn to use models as quick tools to understand 3D forms through the making of a cube to be assembled
from minimum 4 parts before a fi nal model is made.
They then move on to making Archimedean solids by interlocking surfaces in an exercise that brings in the added dimension of team work. Finally, groups of students receive a set of drawings which they read before turning them into a model. The focus is on identifying appropriate materials to build the model, and following the various steps of the process of model-making: drafting the drawing, making a process model, selecting the materials, sampling a section and arriving at the fi nal presentation.
