Submerged Culture

Everybody has a sense of belongingness on earth from where they don’t want to be detached. When this piece of land is covered with water there will be a day when people will be floating among the sky and water. Building on this imaginary and a microbiological method where pure cultures of aerobic bacteria are grown by incubating microorganisms in a liquid medium subject to continuous agitation,Submerged Culture is a speculative project that empowers people likely to be displaced by submergence to continue living where they belong. The project couples submergence and settlement in a way to live with water rather than hopelessly fight against it.
Delving on this connection to the land where they belong, this project envisions a way to retain this umbilical cord while accommodating rising water levels. It works with an easy to assemble modular mechanism that uses the foundational strength of submerged homes to create shifting platforms that accommodate assembling and disassembling modules. These assemblies are used to accommodate various activities of the village besides creating spaces for living, working, education, healthcare and recreation.

Mapping the consumption and wastage pattern of potable water in CEPT campus.

The natural watersheds where the city of Ahmedabad is located are a part of a larger river basin, the Sabarmati. In the course of urbanisation, this topography has been disturbed which is undoubtedly inevitable, but it is vital to focus on maintaining larger percentage of the natural land.

Mapping the potential vacant spaces by understanding different layers of Ahmedabad.

A study of different topographical, physical and man made elements that lead to the different water issues in the city.Identifying the vacant spaces across the city of Ahmedabad to develop green infrastructure.

The sheet outlines the dam construction timeline and the repercussions due to its construction.A number of villages were devastated due to flooding of river water and my study revolves around one such village, Nisarpur in Madhya Pradesh..The increased dam height with no proper rehabilitation taking place simultaneously endangered the villages and led to a loss of their land and identity.

Studying the pattern of rising water level engulfing the portions of the village in a gradual manner. There are various pockets created where village is getting submerged. The pattern shows how from 121 meter the water level has risen to 138 meters.

Re-imagining the village to combat the submergence even while maintaining their ethos without disrupting their normal way of living.Different symbols are used and placed to denote various typologies in order to elevate their living standards. The design and planning of the floating village has been done in accordance to the rising river water pattern. The floating village eventually merges with the existing habitat.A flexible and modular layout has been designed which can be replicated and expand

Each typology is modular and flexible and is moulded into different forms. The rooms are built on stilts which can vary in size according to water level. These stilts have platforms tied giving more space to people for different activities.

A view of routine life which gets shaped according to water levels.

The floating village a new concept for the village that allows them to live in their own premise with the rising water.
