Redesigning Kumbharwada

Kumbharwada sits in the heart of Mumbai, in Dharavi. Connected by major thoroughfares and train routes, it is a site of diverse and extensive activity. Home to a community of potters from Gujarat since generations, Kumbharwada produces earthenware which is transported and sold across the country. The coexistence of residential and pottery related activities generates a complex live-work dynamic where the units serve as homes, workshops, storage spaces and more. The design aims to enhance this live-work dynamic while generating more public and communal spaces which serve as converging points for work, residence, commerce and social activity for the community.
