Housing Strategy: Provision of rental housing in Surat

The Studio aimed to develop a city-wide housing strategy for  Surat, wherein the choices of affordable houses can be expanded through all income groups and whereby it is demonstrated how the city of Surat will be able to efficiently address the issue of housing unaffordability, within its unique land- and labour market. One element to improve housing is through the provision of rental housing, wherefor the rationale of this strategy is to provide financial and regulatory support for the households living in informal or formal sub-standard housing and with an annual income of 1.92 lakh INR or less, and who are therefore not catered by the formal rental market.
