In-Situ Upgrade of Slums

This strategy focuses on the in-situ upgrade of slums by upgrading the physical infrastructure with minimum disruptions to the existing condition, to preserve livelihoods. Eviction and involuntary relocation represent insensitivity to the socio-cultural dynamics in slum settlements. The loss of community that occurs during this is just as damaging as the physical destruction of homes. The provision of basic services to all is the most cost-effective and socially appropriate approach to improve the living conditions and urban environment of cities. Slum upgrading also recognizes the investments the households have previously made on their houses.
