The housing strategy studio focuses on the market where land and finances play a major role as access to decent housing is a key to a habitable city. However cities across developed and developing country are grappling with varying degree of housing affordability as per specifics of local land and labor markets. Therefore to ensure access to decent affordable housing for all income group it is complex and requires multi-prolonged approach. It requires framing of policies and regulations that will enable local markets to generate adequate and affordable housing stock in a city. Housing strategy studio 2020 focuses on housing conditions in Surat, Gujarat. It is known for its textile trade and textile industries, diamond cutting, polishing industries, jari industries, mega fertilizer plant, petroleum and chemical engineering industries. This study undertook different qualitative and quantitative methodologies such as by engaging with the local authorities and communities through surveys, mapping and physical documentation in 4 different phases. Phase 1 consists of situational assessment and growth pattern of the city where the spatial growth and population growth in last three decades is observed, ticket size and ticket price of the land in market is assessed which helps figure out the issues in housing market in the city.
