3 Approaches to promote NMT in Rajkot city

The study involved preparation of a Mobility Plan for Rajkot city in Gujarat. Through field survey and data collection, two main visions for the city are proposed viz. safety for pedestrians and cyclists; and lower emissions within the next two decades in the city municipal areas. The field work was carried out between January-March 2020 in the city; wherein three key issues were identified. Firstly, it was observed that the city suffered from inadequate Non-Motorized Transport (NMT) infrastructure, which is responsible for poor safety of pedestrians and cyclists in the city. Secondly, the existing NMT infrastructure, mainly in the form of pedestrian footpaths is encroached regularly by commercial activities of hawkers, shopkeepers and house-owners. Finally, the above two issues have resulted in a fairly lower NMT mode share (29 per cent currently). In order to deal with the above mentioned issues, three broad planning approaches are proposed in this portfolio.
