Strategic Transportation Plan

Provision of urban mobility and public transport is one of the core infrastructure element of the smart city mission. Strategic Transportation Plan helps define the growth direction of urban transport elements in a city. The aim of this studio is to understand the process of formation of a Strategic Transportation Plan document. Rajkot, one of the 100 smart cities proposed in India is used as the base study to understand the process. From primary and secondary surveys, within the urban boundaries of Rajkot, 13% of the total trips of 30, 00, 000 transit trips are made by Intermediate Public Transport (IPT) like 3 wheelers auto rickshaws, jeeps and Chakdas. This portfolio will focus on the informal public transport share in Rajkot, including its existing role, its advantages and disadvantages and most importantly the need for projects related to IPT to optimize usage of public transport, regulating its fleet to make streets accessible to all and lastly improving its fleet type towards green fuels and reduce mode share of IPT to 5% from existing 13%.
