Upgradation of Non Motorized Transportation

Rajkot is the fourth-largest city in the state of Gujarat, with the municipal area under Rajkot Municpal Corporation (RMC) being 124.85 sq.km. and a total area of 657.12 sq. km. under the entire area of Rajkot Urban Development Authority (RUDA). It has a population of 18 lakhs. Tremendous growth of the city over the years has plagued the traffic condition of the city. With industrial development, commercial development and migration to the city, it has become very important to plan the transportation system of the city strategically.
This semester work focusses on developing a Strategic Transportation Plan (STP) for the city of Rajkot. Various forms of data were collected using primary and secondary surveys across the city for the purpose. The surveys included Household Surveys to understand the trip patterns of the people of the city, Land Use Surveys to understand the land use in the city and the Road Inventory Survey to understand the current condition of the roads in the city. Various aspects of the urban setting like the road network, Intermediate Public Transport, Public Transport, Multimodal terminals etc have been worked upon in order to develop a comprehensive transportation plan. This report focusses on the aspects of Non-Motorised Transport (NMT), Parking and the issues of the Inner City.
