Redevelopment of Temple Precinct of Bodhgaya, Bihar

Bodhgaya, being the Origin of Buddhism has a tremendous cultural connotation, and is therefore an extremely important center for national, as well as international tourism putting it in line with other major religious centers such as Vatican and Mecca.
Mahabodhi Temple and its surrounding, currently doesn’t build up to the formation of a single precinct and lacks a sense of grandeur for the Temple affecting the image of the town. Apart from that, the town also has different varieties of public spaces which are hardly acknowledged by the visitors as they are in poor condition and are quite scattered with weak linkages between them.
This Design Report initially explains the existing scenario of the surroundings of Mahabodhi Temple, the main challenges faced by the precinct and the opportunities for way forward. The Report further proceeds with the Design Position to connect all the scattered public spaces and the main design strategies explaining how a strong connection can be established between those public spaces by following the Buddhist Theology’s concept of extending the cardinal axis of the Temple.
The Report further demonstrates how the area will transform after the Urban Design intervention and what sort of qualitative and quantitative changes would happen in the area surrounding the Mahabodhi Temple. Finally, the report concludes showing the demonstration of a larger vision which brings a Town level transformation.
