Traditional urbanism in India is both ephemeral and dynamic. The town of Pushkar, located in Aravalli Hills is one such diverse example of the same scenario. It is a place for colossal flow of tourists to participate in various celebrations, festivals, religious practices and cultural events around the town. However, the nature of end-user of the town is extremely plural. Hence, perceivers of town in form of locals, domestic & international tourist offer a huge chance to intervene in the plural nature of public realm. The town hosts more than 20 lac local & international tourists each year. Elements like temples, Ghats & Kunds offer spiritual setting for numerous cultural events which acts as a catalyst to regenerate the townscape of Pushkar. Experience of the city is cyclic according to climate & season. Although, due to limited resources and infrastructural gaps, the town faces a huge pressure in the area of its functionality. Under HRIDAY - City heritage plan for Ajmer-Puskar, a total of five areas are set to be under prioritized heritage assets list. The delineated area for Pushkar covers Parikrama, Ghats, vicinity of Brahma Temple, its access and environs. HRIDAY CHP covers 15 heritage assets and stretches to a length of 3.17 km. The proposal plans to promote Heritage Walk for the influence area around Brahma Temple and Lake including other heritage assets with improvement in civic infrastructure. It may be noted that, filling the infrastructure gaps, beautification and refurbishment alone would not lead to urban transformation of the town. The action plan needs to be structured around specific transformations that strengthen and adds a new perspective to the image of the town. There is an opportunity to tap on the plural nature of the perceivers of the town and look at the town through its Ghats & Sarovar by not limiting its identity to streets and temples. Reimaging Pushkar by integrating Built, Open & Natural assets. Vision: “Reimaging Pushkar through its Ghats.” Objective: •Rethinking Ghats as the new identity of the town. •Connecting all the Ghats through programmatic interventions. •Provision of infrastructure for locals and tourists to enhance user experience.
