REVIVING CULTURAL LANDSCAPE OF DORI BAZAAR, MATHURA

Strongly influenced by the geographical and religious dynamics of the region, the historic town of Mathura is an example of traditional urbanism. Mathura has a long history and tradition associated with the birth of Lord Krishna. It retains the relics of its myths, legends, and historical tales in numerous temples located in and around the city giving a sense of belonging to the place. Dori bazaar street is an important axis connecting Krishna Janmabhoomi to river Yamuna. The precinct has a unique character owning to its historical, cultural, social, and religious significance. It is characterized by three heritage layers categorized by three different zones of activities.
The historic city has to balance today the contemporary needs of modern town at the same time preserving the tangible and intangible heritage of the city. It is under constant pressure to provide tourist facilities due to increasing tourism, where the floating population is 4 times the residents as per the Culture Heritage Plan (CHP) report of Mathura. And, hence the trend of residential buildings getting converted into Dharamshala can be observed. But the new buildings lack cohesiveness with existing heritage buildings resulting in loss of its historic character. The project intends to understand the opportunities and issues identified in the precinct and strategize to enhance and strengthen the character of Dori bazaar street and help revive the heritage importance of the Kans Quila precinct.
