Slumbai - slums could inspire the cities of future

Some years back many slum ares started getting redeveloped and the process is continuing till today in the city of Mumbai. The vacant areas and reclaimed land in suburbs are being used to construct house to slum dwellers from across Mumbai under Slum Rehabilitation Programme. The slum dwellers who shifted to these new housing typologies leaving behind the slums, finds it difficult to live. The slums were providing more economical networks, more informally settled up and were more livable. Slumbai as a project talks about considering slums as a sustainable unit to live as well as work as a better system and could deal with present upcoming problems of space crunch, vehicular streets and lack of good public realm. Treating the concept of sustainability, walkability and livability with design and regulations will make it up for slums to inspire the cities of future.
