Colour Theory

S6

Taking a break from the focus on drawing, the exercise introduces colour theory and provides an overview of the psychology of colours, the colour wheel, concepts of hue and saturation values and colour schemes and harmonies. Using a photograph as a starting point, the process involves pixelating it to a grid of 1 x 1 cm, and working on mixing colours to make tints, shades and tones through which to represent it. The next stage entails the development of different colour schemes/ harmonies: analogous, direct-, split- or triad-complementary or alternate complementary. The final step of the exploration of colour consists of identifying the colour palette of a given designer, artist or architect through a collage, and representing it through a graphical composition showing an understanding of the way in which the colours are used.
