Journey to Death | Varanasi

The project focuses on the community of Doms in Varanasi. Doms are the death keepers who burn the corpses of the dead on the ghats of Varanasi. They have very poor living conditions and are considered as untouchables in the society. The income generated through burning corpses are not enough for their living. The idea of the intervention is to provide better organized way of cremation. The design also talks about generating awareness amongst the people regarding the community of Doms and the importance of them being involved in the process of death. Building intervention as a journey, the design talks about the functions that happen before, after and at the time of death and how these functions can be helpful for both, the Doms and people visiting Varanasi to cremate.
