The Living Barn | Chandigarh

With the death of “Chandigarh before Corbusier”, the indigenous (essentially farmers) are now in a state of flux wherein they have become the visitors of the city. Now, migrant farmers from neighboring towns come bi-weekly to sell their produce and take to vacant plots spread throughout the city as their marketplaces. While migrant labours occupy the “labour chowk”, spending their entire week waiting for builders or contractors to approach them for their skillset. Both activities are conducted in complete absence of amenities cause inconvenience for the users as well as the residents as an aftermath of the temporary set-ups.
The intervention seeks to bring back the life of the originals by a way of formalization of the self-occupation systems that the people have found. The idea is to form a network of insertions, superimposition of which over the sectoral network might open scope for involvement of residents of the well-off areas as well, eventually dissolving the economic boundary created.
