Exploration of Design - Material in Focus

The studio will require students to evolve a fresh design based on the programmatic requirements introduced at the onset of the semester and produce detailed construction drawings for same, implementing their learning from sequentially crafted and regularly discussed exercises during the tenure of complete semester. These exercises will be introduced and conducted allowing a student to experience site execution of project, in real-time. Project budgetary constraints are intentionally ignored to facilitate design & material exploration.
The process adopted for the semester- It will require students to study properties, details, sizes, etc. of various construction materials. Later the student will develop their own material pallet. The criteria for selection of material will be based on their understanding of their concept of the project, activity designed and constructability. The resultant design solution would be more harmonious and integrated. The produced drawings will bear the reflection of core design philosophy, conscious choice of materials and thus produced suitable details. The sequence of produced drawings will also enable to understand the interdependency of one drawing on another. This will strengthen their logical reasoning to produce a specific drawing.

Studio Unit

Collage of some of students work - Varied exploration in design were demonstrated by students using the chosen material as per their material pallet. The final outputs were manifested as varied forms of designed elements such as storage, seating element, working element, ceiling and partitions, exploitation of structural properties of material, the aesthetic properties of material.

Table Design - Exploration with concrete: Student demonstrated the "insitu casting" as property of RCC and the strength of material by cantilevering the work plane.

Storage Design - Exploration with Aluminum: Student demonstrated the understanding of light weightiness of Aluminum and thus designing a flexible storage space that can be converted into a display area for prospective client.

Storage Design - Exploration with Wood + M S Sections: Student utilized the stairwell to introduce an informal sitting area using wood to add warmth of natural material, where informal discussions can happen. The underneath of staircase flight is used for storage from the other side of room as storage.

Storage Design - Exploration with Plywood + MS: Student demonstrated the understanding of planar properties that are offered by MS Sheet & Plywood and has attempted to use the structural strength of MS and slenderness to minimize the emphasis of storage, while allowing maximum visibility for the product that is stored.
