A stagnant defunct Industrial Area: Gomtipur and Rakhial

The areas of Gomtipur and Rakhial housed almost 65 mills in the early 1900s. The mills were surrounded by "chawls" that were built for providing shelter to the mill workers. The strong hold of ready made garment industry in market led to  the shut down of the mills. Many mill compounds are converted to housing schemes or commercial complexes. But almost 4 mill compounds are abandoned pieces of land due to disputes and the chawls are still home to the mill worker families. These workers got ownership to their houses in 1984 and still wish to stay in the area.
