Development of Fringe land:The prospects of Urban change

Industrial activities are the prime drivers of urban economy and growth especially a developing country like India. Industrialization adds to employment growth and contributes to the reduction of the Human Poverty Index (HPI) which in turn increases their standards of living. According to MSME, since Industrialisation started in Ahmedabad, the city has got recognition of being a commercial capital and urban economy generator of the state. The area documented in this publication lies in Vatva, the oldest industrial estate of Ahmedabad and the developing fringe land. The study area, Ghodasar lies in the immediate neighborhood of Vatva GIDC, industrial estates with predominant residential usage. The area is about 15kms away from the Navrangpura road. The area has lower land rates as compared to the city centers. The pattern documented in the publication explains the lifestyle, income, and expenditures and the influence these industrial estates have on the fringe land developments and urban morphology are depicted. The story documented portrays how industries agglomerate people and business around it and lead to the development of the area due to the urban demands of the people. Moreover, a linkage between formal industrial job sector and informal vending activities is also explained with data and analysis.
