Nava Naroda : Impact of Peripheral Urbanization

The city Ahmedabad is divided into two parts, East and West, both having a distinct character. To study in detail about these characteristic variations, 1 sq km of an area was chosen among the East and West of the city. A study on various parameters like Streets and connectivity; Built form and typology; Public realm; Water and sanitation; Transportation choice; Land development; Housing choice; Jobs was undertaken in the “Understanding the City studio 2019” at CEPT University. Nava Naroda is Located in the eastern part of the city Ahmedabad. The precinct started developing 14-15 years ago with few semi-detached and row houses, later developed as a residential area because of the establishment of GIDC and Arvind mills in Naroda. Employees started settling in and around Naroda. As the problem of congestion on roads and houses emerged in late 2004’s, employees and labourers stepped into Nava Naroda, which is within a 5km radius. Initially, people settled in rental houses, eventually, housing preference changed to own houses with considerable open spaces. The important factor for the development of Nava Naroda’s land rates. Low land rates facilitated the people to buy land and house, as the locality is in the periphery. The land rates in the periphery are very low when compared to other core locations because of less infrastructure, this fascinated people to acquire own land and house, But the preference of this shift to periphery has both pros and cons.
