Saijpur Bogha: An industrial neighbourhood

The growth of Ahmedabad city in the fringe areas like Saijpur Bogha is highly affected by Naroda, Gujrat Industrial Development Corporation (GIDC). The industrialization has affected the physical morphology of the urban area. The process of urbanization driven by industrialization laid to the transformation of land use from agriculture to industrial to residential and commercial. The essay refers to the key physical, economic and social aspects of Saijpur Bogha. Development of Naroda industrial estate laid to the physical change of Saijpur, which further changed the visual landscape, this industrial estate absorbs a large number of workers both skilled and unskilled. “Understanding the city” studio involved studying a precinct named Saijpur Bogha, of which a part area of 1 square kilometer was studied through different parameters that made understanding of neighbourhood better. this precinct comprises of two major localities Om-Nagar and Krishna-Nagar. These two areas are similar terms of social and economic aspects. Due to which the built fabric, character of the street, nature of jobs and their prosperity are the same. This study of Saijpur Bogha has been conducted using on-site surveys, extrapolated data, and interviews about Saijpur Bogha. The essay explains the impact of the industry as an economic generator, nuisance of industry, how it made the people of the Saijpur captive to the industrial jobs and limitation of an industrial neighborhood in terms of housing characteristics.
