In spite of high population density, from the study as a part of “Understanding the City”, MUP Foundation studio 2019 at CEPT University, the slums in Ahmedabad, especially in Odhav, not only help us to identify that they are a part of the growth of the city and development against urban poverty that is still predominant in the urban economy in India. Slums in Odhav are getting improved socially and economically by utilising available resources and establishing various informal activities that benefit slum dwellers. The largest informal establishment is the collection of recyclable scraps and recycling them creating more than 400 jobs in a 1 sq.km precinct.
