The Vicissitude of Labour Market in Saraspur

‘Understanding the City’ Foundation studio of the Master’s in Planning programme aims at studying the city of Ahmedabad within parameters set by the programme. It introduces many ways to discern the structure and components of urban planning. This portfolio examines a square kilometre area in Saraspur and Bapunagar. This study is based on history and transformation, land, transport, infrastructure and services, housing surveys, establishment survey and among others. The portfolio aims to understand what the governing factors for the evolution of precinct and infers or summarizes the Vicissitude of Labour Market in Saraspur. Saraspur is located in Ahmedabad, towards the east of the Sabarmati river and therefore retains the majority of the old houses in the organic patterned settlement, that are there from generations. In Saraspur, it is the society that influenced the urban fabric and does so even today; this can be seen in the varied use of built typology that transitions in its use as per growing economy of the area.
