Navi Vasahat : The Fringe In Transition

The study focuses on the socioeconomic development of Ahmedabad's metropolitan outskirts as a result of regulated decentralization of industries. Industries have been a significant driver of the city's economic development, attracting large numbers of migrant workers seeking employment. Within the study area, two periods of decentralization of industries and the consequent shift in housing typology are studied. Similar to Shenzhen, China, Ahmedabad's expansion as a city has been fueled by a combination of decentralization, marketization, and the redevelopment of old industrial areas to residential hotspots resulting in population transfer with newer fringes developing like Dholera.
