Contextual Approach to TOD, Ecology, Heritage: Hauz Khas

This LAP addresses the contextual needs of Hauz Khas area, by integrating Ecology and Heritage and collectively transforming a dormant residential locality into Transit Oriented Development.

The proposal is a result of an extensive field study and existing situation analysis. This also incorporates insights from stakeholder engagement and secondary research. The iterative studio process allowed for continuous evolution and immense learning.

Context: Delhi is one of the largest and most populated cities of India as well as the Global South. It has seen significant population influx and expansion over the last century. In recent decades, the city has also seen introduction of an intensive metro rail network connecting across NCR region. Despite having a significant planning authority and large planned areas, 45% of the development, catering to the demand falls under unplanned category, away from the city centre. This demonstrates the stifling of growth in older planned areas closer to the city core. Hence, the pressure for redevelopment is higher on such low density older planned areas. The studio proposal aims to efficiently utilize such high capacity, serviced urban land, in a livable and ecologically sensitive manner.
