The unregulated development of suburban cities around the big cities is nothing new in a country like India. In the mid-19th century, the Kolkata city border started expanding giving birth to such suburban cities. Baruipur, a Kolkata centric satellite town is one such example which is located at the southernmost edge of the KMDA area. The city has evolved from its origin around two anchor points, one is the railway station and other is the Kulpi road that connects Baruipur to Kolkata. So, to analyse and understand the factors that shaped the city in more depth, a neighbourhood of one square kilometre is selected, which consists of the city centre and station road along with its vicinity. The work focuses on understanding the evolution, street network, built form and land development of the neighbourhood drawn through primary survey and telephonic conversations with locals.
