Srot, A pilot project for constructed wetlands

Humans demand water for their daily use; that water can be recycled and act as a source for many purposes like irrigation, reuse, etc. The water in the site is the grey water taken from the shahpur pumping station which will be primarily treated in the proposed 25MLD STP in Shahpur, and the rainwater collected on site and from nearby areas. It would be cleaned at various levels through modern natural methods of water treatment, surface and sub- surface flow constructed wetlands and other landscape interventions on site and the final product would be used for irrigation on the site and the riverfront park near Subhash bridge. The water demand being met is 1MLD. Also the water hyacinth pond will treat water and would be used as bio mass, hence the title SROT. Sabarmati used to be a rainfed river which had many pockets of greens because the river used to narrow, broaden at various places and after drying up distributed into various tributaries. After the construction of the riverfront the river has a more channelized feature and the peripheral character having the habitat of various flora, fauna and avifauna is lost. The site has a linear geometry which has the potential and length to treat the grey water from the nearby sewage treatment plant to use the water as a channel which would act as a spine and it could lead to water bodies which could also collect rainwater The site will act as a constructed wetland park; unique to the context of Ahmedabad. It will be a pilot project to treat water through landscape interventions. It will also be a collection of different flora and the different ways the spaces that would be expressed using them with different levels, pause points, etc. Hence will act as a habitat to different fauna.
