An Urban Anatomy of Shahibaug

The Portfolio summarizes the Shahibaug area which is located near the banks of the Sabarmati river in Ahmedabad. The area is located 7.3 km from the city center (Income Tax Office) and near Riverfront Park. The Shahibaug includes residential and commercial sectors Earlier, Shahibaug was famous for its cotton textile mills. Textile mills were demolished and that area is now used for commercial shopping malls and complexes. With the demolition of textile mills, new industries were also built with advanced technology. Later in the 20th century, due to influential people moving in, Shahibaug entered its modern day. Raj Bhawan in Shahibaug was set up after Gujarat’s separation which led to a chain of events that led to numerous institutions being set up in the area generating large-scale employment and attracting people to move in. In the 21st century, apartment building typology was constructed to accommodate newly attracted people. In the transportation sector, the Shahibaug flyover was built which further connects to the airport road.
