The root aim of every art form is to elicit an emotional response in the observer. The thesis seeks to explore the relationship and contribution of space in inculcating this emotional response in music, for the musician and the audience in the case of the semi-classical genre of Thumri. The cities and the kothas in which the genre was sung and developed have deeply influenced its form and repertoire.
