THE SMASHING STRINGS

This studio-unit intends to investigate into ‘processes’ in architectural design activity. The processes start with an IMAGE, an image showing the event of badminton jump smash short was taken as a starting point. The first part of the design process is titled as ‘abstraction’. To begin with, after careful examination of the image, we will derive two-dimensional abstract ideas/diagrams that represent movement of body position. These two-dimensional diagrams will be converted into three-dimensional models in the next stage with various model-making techniques. One of the important components in that is the process of ‘transformation’ through different levels of interpretation. In this process, we deal with transformation of experiential data into architectural form with the help of ‘abstract’ tools and structural concepts. By changing the model-making material the form goes through transformation and different layers are added in the process. In this first part of ‘abstraction’ the form is in the abstract realm, which means it is in the abstract realm and it doesn’t have the physical properties of form such as; dimension, direction, scale, etc. The second part of the design process is titled as ‘tectonics’. By doing this, the abstract form now enters in to physical realm and all the issues of material, construction, climate, program, and site are addressed till the final architectural form is achieved. After this tensegrity system was applied to the form to give it structure with architectural detailing.
