Issues and challenges faced, in provision and functioning of Death related physical assets, by Urban Local Bodies.

As Khalil Gibran said, “For life and death are one, as the river and sea are one”.Nonetheless, it is indeed a painful event for the loved ones and takes time for them to recover from this suffering of someone passing away. There are numerous examples, anecdotes and stories – mostly undocumented - of ill designed built spaces and assets which are used at the time of death or post-transition event which have been extremely challenging, heartbreaking, undignified, at times embarrassing for the users. Amongst the 18 functions of the Urban Local Body listed in the 12th schedule of Constitution’s 74th Amendment Act 1992, one of the items is provision and upkeep of Burials and burial grounds; cremations, cremation grounds and electric crematoriums. This research aims at identifying the current issues and challenges faced in provision and functioning of physical assets for this particular function at its optimum capacity, as well as possibly recommend areas for improvement.
