City Laws And Councillor Portal

Rapid urbanization in India will be one of the most dominant trends in the coming years. From economic growth and jobs to social security for migrants, from climate change to water and sanitation, and from gender equality to social justice, cities are both part of the problem and the solution. Urban Local Governments thus will need to play a leadership role in addressing these challenges. However, strengthening the hands of Urban Local Governments is an unfinished agenda in India. Mayors/Councillors who govern India’s cities are toothless unlike globally well run cities. There is not even a source currently for the active citizenry / CSOs/ media to access detailed profiles of the Councillors, which is otherwise available for the MPs and MLAs in the country. Similarly, the active citizenry do not have a source to access city bye-laws that govern them. This project, therefore, aims to fill in this information gap, creating an online portal for curating city wide bye-laws and profiles of Councillors. This would require collection, and curation of city laws and councillor profiles, in a simplified manner. Such portal will initially start by using open source tools such as G Suite.
