Mehsana - Municipal Solid Waste Management

Mehsana is the district headquarters of the Mahesana district in Gujarat. It is a Class A municipality as the population is more than 1,00,000 as per the 2011 Census. Solid Waste Management is a key area of focus for the Municipality. The city faces major environmental challenges associated with waste generation and insufficient waste collection, transportation, treatment, and disposal. The current waste management systems are unable to cope with the volumes of waste generated by an expanding urban population, posing a threat to the environment and public health. The existing state of SWM in Mehsana municipality was analyzed through assessing the current system, policy reviews, benchmarking and stakeholder consultation. Further, areas of improvement and case studies were identified to reach strategical and tactical proposals. To improve the condition of open dumpsites and GVPs in the city, Route Rationalization was proposed to ensure a efficient collection system.
