In India, gated developments flourished as a part of peri-urban development triggered by economic reforms post-liberalization since the early 1990s. Gated communities and private townships have now become a predominant form for housing and mixed-use development in peri-urban areas in tier II cities and also rising as a preferred approach to redevelopment in tier I cities of India. As a result of a gradual shift in the urbanization trends, the state governments have proactively encouraged the development of gated communities and private townships by formulating acts and policies to incentivize them. Hence, it is imperative to study the emergence of gated developments as they are a part of the urban landscape and have a significant effect on the spatial and social character of the city. However, it is to scrutinize the model of privatization-driven urbanization to comment on its appropriateness in the present-day urban context of our country.
