Augmenting Growth of Saurashtra's Industrial Capital

The studio exercise was aimed at formulating a statutory Development Plan for the city of Rajkot for the horizon year of 2041. We conceived this Development Plan as a tool to enhance the strengths, resolve the issues and exploit opportunities to the best measure possible. Hence, the Development Plan for Rajkot aimed to augment its manufacturing driven economy and facilitate its growth as an industrial and logistics centre in the Saurashtra region. For an industrial economy to sustain, it is integral for the industries to be diverse, decentralized and integrated into the main city fabric. Hence, the focus and key objective of the DP was to utilize complementary land uses, public transportation, affordable housing and infrastructure to integrate industrial clusters with the main city fabric. Accounting for uncertainties, it was important for the DP 2041 to be robust and flexible, while at the same time being implementable. This was achieved by keeping processes simple with minimum overlaps, nuisance based zoning and development control regulations.
