THE SECOND SPACE: INSTITUTIONAL LIVING for the ELDERLY

This project investigates an institutional, residential typology that caters to the growing need for caring for the elderly before the need for intensive care. This project explores the possibility of an “in-between” care institution for the elderly, a home between the ideal family home and a care-intensive institution. The program of this project acknowledges the gradually-increasing difficulties of the aging to carry out simple daily tasks and manage their medical needs and attempts to create a community system where one can depend on the collective and be passively watched. Absolute privacy and seclusion are traded for passive monitoring and co-living, encouraging the formation of supportive, close-knit groups and a community while still maintaining each inhabitant's independence.
