Urban Planning and Regulations - Andheri Urban Renewal

This pedestrian friendly project is located in the bustling station area of Andheri locality, Mumbai city. A key transport hub in the city, with an approximate daily footfall of 50,000, Andheri is in dire need of better infrastructure as well as refined regulations to ensure efficiency.
The project revolves around the transition of one transport form to another, with the help of regulations concerning the build form and streets. The planning process was developed after detail study of Transport Oriented Development projects in Mumbai, in India and globally.

Understanding the existing regulations, acts and policies in Mumbai.

Observing and analyzing patterns and thus problem areas on site.

Creating a vision for the site and developing a manifesto to achieve the vision.

Designing a part of the site through ideal regulations. (free design)

Re-designing the same part of the site through existing regulations. (constraint design)

Exploring street design through sections and views.

Comparing the positives of free design and constraint design and deriving a way to proceed.
