Bucho's Gracias

The program creates a ‘Place for Indulgance’ at NID, Ahemdabad. The aim is for the building to serve three primary purposes a cafe, a shop and an exhibition space. The direct inspiration for the form of the building is the music piece and subsequently the musicscape model. The program focuses on designing a building incorporating a kinetic element that enhances the space's function and experience. The design process starts with recreating an existing kinetic design on a 1:1 scale and ends with designing and detailing a building with a kinetic element as an integral component.

The pictures show a 1:1 scale model of Kinetic Elements from projects by previous semester students of Space Kinematics

Above are the mechanism details of the Cube which houses a kinetic wall. The kinetic wall opens at a 90 degree angle when circular motion of the handle is translated through 2 gear boxes and a chain-sprocket system to a pivot along which the wall rotates.

The music piece Bucho's Gracias by Los Lobos has been studied and translated into an abstract model.

The design process for the final program including sections, plans, trails and sketches

This sheet summarizes the initial concept for the building derived from the impression created by the music piece. It also shows an initial iteration of the kinetic element.

The top plan shows a staircase cabin which serves as an entrance for the shop and the exhibition space housing the kinetic element.

The section draws attention to the level and plinths in the building.

The joinery details of the top pivot, bottom pivot and the connector system are showed in the slide along with a movement diagram of the kinetic element.

The model made in a 1:10 scale depicts the motion, joinery and mechanism of the Kinetic wall system.
