 The Journey - a music piece by Gustavo Santaolalla, was the beginning of the design process. Decoding it further derived a design for a place to indulge. It formed the base narrative for designing an exhibition space, a cafe and a NIDUS (shop) for the site: National Institute of Design [NID]. A place with dual nature, a place to observe and socialize, a place to interact with food and objects, a place with artistic and technical innovations, a place where the smell is dominant, and an extroverted place with introverted nature of activities. The duality of space is achieved by providing a combination of closed, open and semi-open spaces. The exhibition space and the NIDUS are partially enclosed and partially semi-open, where they connect to the cafe, which is open. The form of the design caries the undefined and unpredictable nature of the chosen music piece. It does not fix a particular path for movement but instead gives the freedom to the user to make their way. The paced-up transition in the music piece [the skylight] brings in light [hope] and turns the melancholic start into a much calmer end. The kinetic skylight plays a significant role in the lighting experience of the exhibition space: the semicircular ring and the disc with overall elliptical diameters of five by four metres. The disc and the ring open using the motorized cam mechanism, letting in natural light and ventilation in the space.
