An Inquiry into Application of Materials in Interior Design

Choosing the suitable material for the true purpose is a critical--and often overlooked--aspect in the larger context of designing buildings and interior spaces. When specified and executed properly, materials support and enhance a project’s overall theme and impart interior space with a solid foundation that balances visual poetry and functionality.

Directed Research Project

ABSTRACT: The appearance of material as application in a space of permanence, is based on the power of its narratives, a concept of perception, as impermanence in a built-form. Materiality drives Function and Human experience in a space. Materiality is “one whole of parts of different identities” to articulate the essence of a space. This research is an attempt to qualify various parts of a spatial system to understand the possibility, potential and manifestation of materials and meanings in a space. The behaviour of materials in their given context dictates the transcendental quality of the space. With this understanding, the research approaches the physical realities and manifestation a as process of Material Application in Interior practices. the theoretical framework is used to understand Design and Materiality as a synthesis in museum design process.

ABSTRACT: The research idea is centralized on the impact of material application in hospitality spaces. Design is a demonstration of thoughts in space, and material is an expression of the design language, providing a tangible identity to the design. Material and design are interdependent and inseparable entities. The research is carried forward to study the factors that influence the material configuration in space. Elemental composition and material application manipulate the user’s perception and engage them to make them experience the realm that possibly links culture, art, and science through material expression. The experience in the space will help them analyse and influence the approach toward the space. Materials provide an identity to the built form by forming a connection with the program. Culture acts as an interface between the program and the material, establishing a connection with the user. The study looks to examine this relationship.

ABSTRACT: Space is not bound to any material but adds substance to the underlying framework by spatially organizing itself following construction principles. The emergence of novel materials and the growth of technology and procedures in conventional structure rehearsals further expand the role of development in making and experiencing the constructed climate. Thus, material purpose and application play a role in arranging designs to tell a story. Characteristics inherited by the materials define material’s expressiveness. Materials impart meaning by forming an inquiry of materials in an enclosed space. Understanding the material application in space with subjectivity, objectivity, and the technical aspects corresponds to materiality and generates precise meaning. Accordingly, the wholeness of space characterizes the material expression caused by functional needs and the perception caused by worldly factors.

ABSTRACT: The material acts as an element, adding dimensionality to the space, reinforcing a narrative, and symbolising an idea. Users consciously or subconsciously respond to materials in spatial composition. Material is used as an element to generate a meaning which symbolises a collective memory of the individualised past. The way different materials react with one another in three-dimensional composition generates a character of uniqueness & a lasting sense of identity. The study aims to understand the material as an added dimensional element as it reinforces a narrative and symbolises an idea. The theme establishes a framework to derive factors contributing in achieving Indian identity. This will allow us to derive the attributes and values generated for the experience of a space. To understand the designer’s intent in re-actualising the past and abstracting it in contemporary scenarios.
