National Sample Survey Organisation (NSSO) data shows that more than 60% of rural and urban households use the bus as their primary mode of transport. Women are dependent more on public transport for their travel needs. Also, travel patterns of women are unique as they majorly cater to various socio-economic trips while the systems are not planned for their needs. Mobility is primary requirement to women’s empowerment as it provides access to opportunities for economic independence. Hence, there is a need for developing gender inclusive public transport. Also, as the work participation rate of women are increasing, which is important for economic growth of a region. It is vital to analyze scope of women employment/participation in various sectors of bus eco-system to empower women.
