Branded Environments Design: Lighting Design in Retail Spaces

Lighting design plays a crucial role in retail store design. While it has a functional role to play in retail spaces, it also has a huge impact on the overall ambience of the space and the spatial experiences generated. These experiences generated, directly impact the perception of brand image and influence the shopping behavior. In addition to this, there is rise in demand for experiential retail spaces where lighting design has the potential to influence the perception psychology. It is thus important for retail store designers to develop a thorough understanding of the role and aspects of lighting design and blending it seamlessly with other aspects of retail store design.
With the advancement of technology and availability of variety of fixtures as well as
possibilities of customized lighting design solutions, it is important for retail space designers to understand both the technical aspects of lighting such as color, intensity, temperature, design of lighting fixtures for spread, orientation etc. as well as lighting design principles for generation of desired spatial experience through permutation and combination of ambient, focal and task lighting as well as aspects of integration with daylight. This study is proposed to be carried out from the perspective of perception psychology and the tenets identified by the pioneer lighting designer, Richard Kelly and the role of lighting in creation of experiences in retail spaces.
