Branded Environments Design: Sustainability in Retail Spaces

Sustainability is a growing concern worldwide, however, it is seldomly addressed in the
context of retail space design. There is tremendous pressure on design of retail spaces to
reduce capital expenses while creating experiential spaces and thus primary design
decisions are driven by focus on return of investment. Nonetheless, now there is growing awareness amongst consumers towards sustainability which in turn is generating demand on retail brands to seek environmentally sustainable solutions. In this context, design of retail spaces can play a huge role. Retail spaces can become more environmentally sustainable by adopting eco-friendly materials and energy efficient solutions.
This study is thus proposed to document this growing aspect of retail space design. It will lookinto national and international best practices demonstrated through certification from LEED for commercial interiors /retail to study the prevalent strategies and policies, availability of resources and challenges involved in adopting sustainability in retail spaces.
