Soni ni Chali - a confluence of informal in the formal

Soni ni Chali, a neighborhood in the Eastern part of Ahmedabad shows a mix of diversity, informality and density in the one square kilometer of area studied. The influence of diverse communities and significant infrastructural changes have shaped the area with a mix of several industries and residences. An infamous characteristic typology of houses with “upar makaan, neeche dukaan” concept is dominant in the neighborhood and therefore leads to a vibrant interface of the ground floor. The builtform is linear and low rise framing the horizontality in the skyline and with the dominance of the semi detached typology the informality is brought out as a flair to the formality of the neighborhood.
