Thakkarbapa Nagar: A Diverse Urban Tapestry

Thakkarbapa Nagar is situated in the north-eastern part of Ahmedabad city. The area is located between the Nikol Canal Road and 132 Feet Ring Road, a national highway. It stands as the testimony of transformation throughout the years. It played a significant role in providing residential opportunities for the mill workers working in Bapunagar and GIDC (Gujarat Industrial Development corporation) estate. The typologies of these settlements have created a mix in spatial pattern of the area. The area is divided into old and new settlements which can be identified by the grain pattern of the area. The initial settlements in the area were purely residential which transformed into mix-use and commercial especially around Thakkarbapa Nagar road due to certain development regulations. This study aims to understand the development of spatial pattern, evolution of the area, street networks, dominant land use in the area and the interplay of the development regulations and policies that led to the transformation of Thakkarbapa Nagar.
