Reconnecting Adrift - Charting Commons along Mhadei

Goa is very much dependent upon its rivers. One of them is the river Mandovi. This “lifeline” of the state is also known as Mhadei or Mahadayi towards its upstream. From traditional farming to religious and cultural associations, river Mhadei has influenced the community life of North Goa. The flow of this river has given rise to some specific cultural and social practices, which eventually get entangled with the culture of Goa. I aim to understand various communities' traditional and contemporary attachment to Mhadei for their everyday life and understand the stresses on them.
