This research project looks into the life and practice of a proponent of the Swadeshi Movement, Sris Chandra Chatterjee (1890 - 1966), who belonged to Bengal and worked across India to give a nationalist turn to modern Indian architecture. Through a study of Chatterjee’s practice, the attempt is to understand his position on the appropriate architecture for modern India and situate this position in the socio-political and economic context of that time. This research project will thereby attempt to chart the trajectory that the practice of Sris Chandra Chatterjee assumed in India’s contemporary architectural history, while identifying and examining the values that animated his practice.
