Selective Surgery of Spontaneous Settlements

The project aims to construct large-scale housing in Gulbai Tekra, located in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, while preserving the unique character and lifestyle of the community. To achieve this, the project is drawing inspiration from Patrick Geddes' "Selective Surgery" approach, which involves careful and selective urban planning to enhance the quality of life for residents. This involves creating more open spaces and living areas that are thoughtfully designed to allow for social interactions and daily activities. Furthermore, the project is emphasizing the relationship between the built environment and the natural surroundings to promote sustainable living and well-being. In essence, the project is taking a holistic approach to building mass housing that values the existing community's way of life while also providing better living possibilities.
