Planning for Wadakkanchery Healthy City

Since recurrence of epidemics are reported to be one of the challenges of climate change, there is a growing attention on public health and desire to safeguard communities through system-wide preparation. Kerala being identified as one of the potential 16 global hotspots for Zoonotic diseases, there had been serious responses from all key stakeholders in the state. Following the announcement of the NITI Aayog in 2021, Wadakkanchery Municipality located 15 kilometers north of Thrissur city made a plan to develop it as a Healthy City. In this regard, the Municipality announced its plan to establish a Community School for Healthy Ageing in partnership with KILA and Kerala University of Health Sciences located at Thrissur. This along with the plan to become a Healthy City was announced on October 1, 2022. The city which recently won the State Award for Best Practices in Solid Waste Management and been a pioneer in several areas related to local governance is now focusing on evolving as a Healthy City. Since it is a new Municipality with lot of land under non builtup activities and proximity to modern medicine centres at Thrissur and Ayurvedic cluster at Shoranur, it has a rich potential to evolve as a Healthy City. This research will help the student to explore the theoretical discourses from urban health, urban planning and formulate a rich spatial plan for the city.
