Towards Green and Sustainable City Design through Town Planning Schemes

Gujarat is one state, whereby town planning mechanism is a fairly successful and well-implemented spatial planning model for development. 40 percent of land is officially allocated for public use by T.P. Act. This is a sizable chunk of public land, which, if used wisely, has the potential to create a green mobility network of open spaces, pedestrian dominant safe and walkable streetscapes and far more meaningful nature based solutions of green and blue infrastructure at the city level. The benefits of a green approach to urban planning are many and far-reaching. Cities around the world have recognised its tremendous potential to lower the carbon footprint, lower urban temperatures, mitigate pollution and overall build the environmental resilience enhancing the physical quality of life and mental well-being of its citizens.
